Wooly Hats
The quality of the wool determines how wooly a hat may be. When referring to the term wooly, it means how frizzy or fuzzy the hat is. Most of us like a wooly hat because it feels so soft and plush.
Wooly wool is made up of short and long wool fibers. When the shorter and longer fibers are together many of the fibers just stick out giving it a wooly look.
In contrast, some wool uses mostly the long fibers and the fibers are laid together nearly perfectly perpendicular. The end result is a much denser fabric that looks great for draping, but isn't nearly the best choice for a soft warm wool hat.
To get a great wooly hat, get one that is made from sheep that have been freshly sheared. In that way, the wool will be much softer and retain much more of the natural oils like lanolin. A hat made from dead wool or wool that has been treated chemically to be removed from the skin is not nearly as soft or durable.
